Position Title:RN Supervisor - Registered Nurse - Hematology Oncology Clinic - Stephenson Cancer Center

Location: Stephenson Cancer Center

Shift: Full-Time (40 hours/week) Monday-Friday (8a-5p)

The Hematology Oncology Clinic an outpatient facility at the Stephenson Cancer Center with 12-15 providers and servicing roughly 60 patients with different blood disorders and cancer diagnoses, also Bone Marrow Biopsy's procedures and interventions. This is a fast-paced, collaborative environment that requires great communication skills, the ability to multitask, and welcomes a willingness to learn .

General Description: Assists with coordinating and supervising activities of nursing services and other medical personnel. Hires, trains, conducts performance appraisals, disciplines, and terminates employees. Plans and implements nursing personnel schedules. May plan schedules for other personnel, students, and volunteers. Assists in observing nursing care to ensure adherence to policy and ensure doctor's orders are strictly followed. Attends meetings and conferences. Conducts monthly nursing staff meetings. May make presentations to committees and staff. Identifies gaps in services for nursing care and proposes solutions to identified problems. Acts as a liaison and advocate for patient services or project participants.

  • Supervises nursing staff on a shift and ensures safe and effective nursing care is provided to assigned patients.
  • Ensures the oncoming shift has adequate nursing personnel to meet identified patient care needs; arranges for staff to work overtime shifts for personnel shortages based on minimum staffing requirements; assists in the development of monthly personnel schedules.
  • Assists in determining work assignments based on nursing resources and identified patient care needs.
  • Assists with revision of policies and procedures.
  • Evaluates, documents and counsels staff on a designated shift regarding job requirements and work performance; assists with employee evaluations and recommends appropriate personnel actions.
  • Conducts meetings with staff on a designated shift to discuss patient care and unit concerns.
  • Ensures educational offerings and experiences are available to staff.
  • Develops quality assurance indicators.
  • If pertinent to the area, will be responsible for updating operating room procedure cards for specialty areas.
  • Ensures orientation of new employees to a unit.
  • Monitors productivity targets established by the department.
  • Works as Staff RN as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:Graduation of a nursing programapproved by a state board of nursing. Associate's Degree in Nursing required. BSN (or higher) preferred. Must be able to obtain a BSN within 30 months of hire date.

Experience: 1.5 years' experience as a Registered Nurse in oncology which includes at least 6 months charge experience.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Current RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact RN License (eNLC). Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire. Current Oncology Certified Nurse Licensure within 2 years of hire date preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of supportive care principles and techniques for oncology patients.
  • Advanced knowledge of bereavement counseling techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of oncology treatment procedures, facilities, and equipment.
  • Advanced knowledge of treatments of oncological diseases and reactions and side effects of related therapy methods.
  • Ability to obtain Organizational Chemotherapy/Biotherapy training within 12-18 months of hire date.
  • Ability to ensure quality, safety, and infection control standards are maintained.
  • Ability to perform nursing assessments, patient triage, and referrals.
  • Ability to educate patients, families, and/or caregivers as to the nature of the disease and to provide instructions on proper care and treatment.
  • Ability to maintain emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other stresses.
  • Must be detail oriented and able to multitask.
  • Ability to supervise employees and handle employee issues.
