Job Description:

POSITION INFORMATION: Provides professional nursing-related healthcare in a medical specialty. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care in a designated patient population or specialty.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Physician Assistance. Assists physician during the examination as needed. Ensures that all information is available to the physician. Accompanies physician on rounds and keeps informed of special orders concerning patients.
  • Sample & Data Collection. Collects samples from patients including blood, urine, etc. Prepares samples for analysis or shipment; collects all laboratory reports, data, and records.
  • Information Gathering. Takes and records various readings such as heart and respiratory rate, blood pressure, weight, body temperature, etc.
  • Patient Follow Up. Makes follow up patient appointments or follows up on patient appointments. Answers routine questions from patients, family, etc.
  • Medication Administration. Under direction of physician or other medical personnel, administers medication to patients.
  • Collaboration. Collaborates with other healthcare professionals to provide efficient quality patient care. Evaluates and improves teaching and nursing practices and recommends modifications; may serve as a functional lead or a direct supervisor of staff such as LPNs, MAs, etc.
  • Patient Education. Provides educational information to patients, family, etc.
  • Emergency Response. Responds to and intervenes in emergency situations such as anaphylaxis, hypoglycemia, hypotension, hemorrhage, respiratory distress, etc.
  • Personnel Supervision. Assumes lead role to ensure policies, procedures, and physician's orders are followed. Directs and evaluates the work of some personnel that may include Clinic Clerks, Medical Assistants, and other Nurses. Trains and schedules workloads of employees.
  • Patient Assessment. Assesses and monitors patient response to procedures and treatments. Reports patient condition and reaction to tests, drugs, treatments, and any significant incidents to the physician.
  • Specialized Testing. Performs specialized testing using physician-guided protocols such as Captopril suppression, water deprivation, etc.
  • Instruction. Instructs medical personnel in the use of highly specialized research equipment, drugs, etc.
  • Counseling. Counsels patients and family about death, side effects of medication, therapy, etc.
  • Research. Participates in and contributes to research activities that are related to the area of specialization in which they are involved. Participates in conferences pertaining to the research area.
  • Training. Has completed or will complete during initial employment additional specialty training and continuing education specific to the specialty hiring, i.e. Pediatric Endocrine Nurse Specialist, Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, etc.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education:Graduate from an accredited school school of nursing required. Bachelor of Science (or higher) in Nursing Board Approved Program preferred.

Equivalent/ Substitution: Will accept an Associate's degree in Nursing plus an additional 24 months of experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree in Nursing

Experience: 12 months related experience in the designated specialty

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Current RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact RN License (eNLC). Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.
