Position Title:Laboratory Director - Cancer, Anatomic Pathology and Specialty Labs

General Description:

Reporting to the Administrative Director of Laboratory Services. Under administrative and medical direction, directs the overall administrative and technical operations of OU Health Cancer, Anatomic Pathology, and Specialty Laboratory departments.

Essential Responsibilities:

Routine Work duties

  • Plans, organizes, directs, and controls laboratory service functions.
  • Ensures that regulatory requirements and standards are met.
  • Provides guidance to leaders and staff.
  • Rounds with all direct reports, unit customers, and physicians.
  • Chairs assigned committees.
  • Works with section medical directors and managers to provide testing to meet the clinical needs of the patient.

Problem Solving

  • Demonstrates the ability to compile and analyze data for operational monitoring which result in focus studies or process improvement.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills including the ability to lead and direct staff and other leaders in an effective manner.
  • Able to initiate dispute resolution in an effective manner.

Assessment

  • Analyzes internal and external assessments for opportunities for process improvement or improved patient care.
  • Reviews section reports for accuracy and completeness.
  • Oversees the assessment of testing platforms and instrumentation in conjunction with the manager and medical director(s).
  • Promotes and executes growth within laboratory departments.

Management

  • Uses hospital resources in a cost-efficient manner.
  • Adjusts staffing as needed while meeting clinical needs.
  • Demonstrates the ability to use key management reports.
  • Participates in the personnel processes for the manager and supervisor staff.
  • Delegates tasks as needed and appropriate.

Purchasing/Inventory

  • Participates in inventory management activities.
  • Evaluates cost-effective alternatives when available and guides purchasing staff in choosing contracted items and vendors.
  • Develops and executes strategic plans and budgetary requirements.
  • Evaluates capital needs and develops a priority list with the section medical directors and managers for submission when due for each section.

Documentation/Reporting/Record Keeping

  • Maintains legible and organized records.
  • Follows OU Health document retention policies.
  • Ensures appropriate regulatory documentation is up-to-date and accessible.

Personnel

  • Complies with all hospital human resources/personnel policies and procedures.
  • Ensures managers and supervisors are utilizing appropriate hiring tools.
  • Makes effective hiring, disciplinary, and dismissal decisions in accordance with OU Health Human Resources policies.
  • Maintains confidentiality of personnel records.
  • Effectively coaches and disciplines personnel including appropriate documentation.
  • Following OU Health and Lab guidelines, performs yearly Performance Appraisals.

Teaching/Development

  • Trains and mentors managers and supervisory personnel.
  • Assumes responsibility of own professional development.

Computer Utilization

  • Utilizes computer technology as required.
  • Proficient in lab operating systems.

Quality Management & Safety

  • Participates in laboratory and Hospital Quality activities.
  • Complies with all Laboratory Quality Management Plan policies and procedures and ensure they are implemented within their sections.
  • Complies with all patient safety goals. Reports all patient safety concerns.
  • Ensures that lab procedure manuals are accurate, complete, written using current document requirements, and up to date.
  • Complies with all hospital and laboratory safety policies and procedures including the appropriate use of PPE.
  • Addresses non-compliance with safety policies and procedures by staff and house staff.
  • Effectively monitors and operates within established goals and maintains compliance with hospital, federal, and state regulations.

General Responsibilities:

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in science or related field.

Experience: Five (5) years of professional experience in laboratory services, which includes two (2) years of supervisory or managerial responsibility for a laboratory services program or equivalent combination of education and experience.

(NOTE: There is no substitution for the 2 years of supervisory experience)

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: A nationally recognized certification from a lab discipline is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of budgetary methods and fiscal management. Knowledge of federal, state, and hospital rules, regulations, and policies governing laboratory and work. Knowledge of current laboratory practices, techniques, and terminology as it relates to autopsies, chemistry, cytology, biochemical, hematology, histology, microbiology, molecular, cytogenetics, outreach services, and surgical pathology. Knowledge of JCAHO accreditation, compliance, and survey processes. Familiar with the quality control requirements of a laboratory plus the related safety issues and guidelines. Skill in effective communication, both verbal and written. Ability to plan and supervise the work of others. Knowledge of report preparation. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others and manage a large department.
